Formby Beach Car Park Closure - Major Conservation Work Underway.
Big changes are happening at #Formby as part of a major conservation project that will bring long-term benefits for both wildlife and visitors.
The Victoria Road beach car park and toilets will close on Thursday 1st May 2025 and remain closed until Spring 2026.
During this time, there will be no parking, no toilet facilities, and no visitor access to the beach via the Victoria Road site.
Visitors are strongly advised not to travel to Formby by car during the bank holiday weekends, busy periods, and sunny days this summer, as parking will be extremely limited. The Lifeboat Road car park and toilets will remain open, but capacity is very restricted.
About the Project:

This major project is designed to restore rare and important sand dune habitats. The existing beach car park — originally built using demolition rubble from the old Harington Barracks — will be removed.
Much of the rubble will be repurposed on-site to form the foundation for a new, similar-sized but more sustainable car park located further inland.
Key points:
• Large metal fencing will be installed around the work site (starting at Victoria Road and Badgers Rake, stretching along the current car park to the beach).
• Expect some noise and heavy machinery during the works.
• No access to the beach, toilets, or bins via Victoria Road from 1st May 2025 to Spring 2026.
• Visitors are encouraged to travel by train where possible and to consider other beaches along the Sefton and Wirral coast.
Why this work is important:
Formby is one of the fastest-moving coastlines in the UK. Restoring natural sand movement is crucial for supporting rare dune wildlife, including natterjack toads and sand lizards. Sand dunes also play a vital role as natural sea defences.
Removing the construction rubble and relocating the car park will reconnect important habitats, prevent further environmental damage, and create a healthier and safer space for both wildlife and visitors.
“We understand people will be disappointed to miss out on visiting Formby this summer, but everyone’s support is greatly appreciated as we work to enhance this special place.”
— Justin Matthews, Formby and Central Lancashire Area Ranger
This conservation project is part of the Dynamic Dunescapes Project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the EU LIFE Programme, and the National Trust — supported by the generosity of National Trust members and visitors.
