Lifeboat Road boardwalk remains closed for essential repairs for a few weeks.
National Trust Formby:
We’re sorry to say that the boardwalk remains closed for essential repairs and is unlikely to be safe to re-open for several weeks. We know how important this route to the beach is and are prioritising this work.
The rangers have dismantled the damaged fence and as expected the sand has collapsed on to the boardwalk. We need the sand sides to settle before we can put up a new fence. Unfortunately many of the timber posts have rotted and will need replacing.
As a precious and protected site we have to work slowly and carefully. In this area we need to make sure we’re minimising damage to the natural marram grass structure.
With the help of fantastic volunteers we’re regularly removing the collapsed sand and hope it will settle enough soon for us to install a new fence.
The shifting sands at Formby are part of what makes this place so special as mobile dunes create the habitats for rare species including natterjack toads and sand lizards. But moving sand also means that any fixed structures like signs and boardwalks don’t last for long.
Thank you for your support and understanding whilst we catch up on essential repairs and maintenance.
With some sunny weather forecast over the weekend we're expecting to be busy. You may decide you'll enjoy your visit more on a quieter day. We're open 7 days a week all year round.
