Lidl and M&S Set to Anchor Major Commercial Development in Formby

Sefton & Formby Developments has secured agreements with prominent retailers M&S, Lidl, and Costa Coffee as part of their ambitious plans for The Point, a 270,000 sq ft shopping and employment complex east of the Formby Bypass.

The development, located on a 31-acre site north of Formby Business Park, will feature a mix of retail and employment spaces. M&S plans to relocate its existing Formby food store into a larger 16,000 sq ft unit, while Lidl, a new addition to the town, will also occupy a 16,000 sq ft space. The project will include a Costa Coffee outlet and a proposed health facility.

Retail will make up approximately 25% of the scheme, with the remaining 75% dedicated to modern, high-quality employment spaces. Sefton & Formby Developments estimates that the project could create up to 1,000 jobs locally.

Consultation Underway

A public consultation has been launched, giving residents an opportunity to share their views on the proposals.

Peter Wilkinson, speaking on behalf of Sefton & Formby Developments, highlighted the importance of the site:

“This site has been allocated by Sefton Council to provide modern, high-quality and much-needed employment space in Formby. New employment development is vital to meet the demands of local businesses and attract new companies to the area.”

Stuart Jardine, regional head of property at Lidl GB, emphasized the retailer’s role in meeting local needs:

“A Lidl store would fill a gap in Formby’s retail scene, providing residents with access to our affordable, high-quality products, especially at a time when value is a priority. It will also create significant job opportunities for the community.”

M&S property director Will Smith explained the decision to relocate from Cloisters to The Point:

“We aim to ensure our stores are in the best locations for our customers. The new Formby store will offer a fresh market environment, including bakery, produce, and flower shop sections, alongside everyday staples and the trusted quality M&S is known for.”

Planning Application

A hybrid planning application is expected to be submitted to Sefton Council in the coming weeks.

Formby residents are encouraged to share their feedback during the consultation period, shaping the future of this significant development.

You only have to drive through aintree to know this is a bad idea for congestion on the formby bypass. It's going to be difficult getting in and out of formby if this goes ahead!
