Iconic Formby Viking Boat Sculpture has finally been restored and will have a new home
In a much-anticipated development, the iconic Viking boat sculpture, first carved in 2019 from a tree in Formby Village, is set to return to a new permanent location. Originally crafted from the trunk of a tree that had been deemed unsafe and needed removal, the sculpture became a beloved part of the Chapel Lane streetscape. The project was spearheaded by Councillor Dutton of Harington Ward, who transformed the lower section of the tree into the distinctive Viking boat that quickly became a local favourite.

Despite its popularity, the sculpture presented challenges due to its origins. As it was still connected to the original tree’s roots, there were concerns about eventual decay and cracking. Additionally, the area in which it was situated—designated as a “tree pit” for maintaining Formby Village’s characteristic tree-lined scene—had to be preserved for new plantings.

With some of the other mature trees in the village nearing the end of their life span, Formby Parish Council made the decision to relocate the sculpture temporarily outside Formby Library and replace it with a newly planted tree, which is now thriving.
The sculpture recently underwent extensive restoration under the care of a skilled arborist. It was treated to combat wood rot and insect damage, using specialised treatments and wood hardeners to preserve its structure. Though the base had to be slightly shortened due to decay, it has been expertly reinforced to ensure its longevity.

The project was funded entirely by the Parish Council, a testament to its commitment to preserving local heritage.
