Frank Rourke's Report from Formby Junior Sports Club

It was another very busy weekend for Formby Junior Sports Club. The Saturday morning Inter Club section continues to gather momentum with all age groups enjoying their football and coaching. In addition there was almost a full programme of Representative team fixtures as well.

REPRESENTATIVE TEAM MATCHES

FJSC Under 12’s played Davenhill FC in the Hightown League. Davenhill went into the lead very early on and only for a great penalty save by Max Hall, FJSC would have been two goals down. FJSC drew level when Dominic Maxwell equalised before he scored again this time from a penalty. Now in control the Under 12’s added to the score with Dominic Maxwell completing his hat trick as well as a goal each from man of the match Charlie Garvey and James Cook to make the final score 5-1 for FJSC.

On Sunday in the Craven Minor League FJSC Under 12 Blacks were in action against Freshfield FC. Charlie Garvey scored after two minutes and then FJSC leapt into a 3 nil lead with two goals from Freddie Garvey with a twenty yard shot and a headed goal from a corner. Freshfield scored a crucial goal just before half time. The second half saw Freshfield grow in confidence and score three times to record a 4-3 victory.

FJSC Under 11 Blacks hosted Southport Trinity and played out a very entertaining match. Isaac Dey made his debut in goal. Abe Rice scored the first goal of the match with a well taken finish and Thomas Donnelly added a second from the penalty spot, after Trinity had scored two earlier goals. Southport Trinity just edged it at half time after scoring with a long-range effort. FJSC’s task became harder still as Trinity extended their lead early in the second half but that led to a determined fight back. First Josh Kearney scored with a confident close-range finish and then Patrick Fleming scored an excellent long range free kick to equalise late on. Formby pushed for the winner, but Southport defended well and held out for the draw. Abe Rice was man of the match for his hard work and overall performance.

FJSC Under 11 White started well in the match with Redgate Rovers Green and scored in the first minute through a great run and shot from George Hansen. They held on for nearly ten minutes before Redgate took control and scored a flurry of goals. After half time the Whites were rejuvenated and hit back with quick strikes from Sami Mansour for his first goal for the club and a powerful shot from Thomas Szabo. Despite being a number of goals behind the Whites played with a lot of determination and gave a good account of themselves.

The encounter between FJSC Under 9 Whites and Southport Athletic was a seven goal thriller. Both teams had opportunities to win the game as the score went back and forth. There was some exceptional goalkeeping from Matthew Crutchley which kept FJSC marginally ahead after excellent goals from Archie Weir, Oscar Buch-Platt, Jacob Davies and Nate Daniels. Man of the Match for an all-round performance was midfielder Reece Bagley.

FJSC Under 8 Reds in only their second ever match played at home against Crosby Stuart who were one of the age group’s strongest teams last season. The Reds conceded a number of goals especially in the first half but greatly improved after the interval. The team effort was rewarded when James Hannan scored his first competitive goal for the team with the assist from Zac McHugh. See team photograph above.

FJSC Under 8 White played Forefield Red in their first match on Saturday in the Hightown League. The Whites played very well with Mason Stringer, Josh Tallon, Jaiden Crosby, Thomas Crutchley, Clayton Gilbertson and Edward Oliver on his debut for the club all scoring goals.

On Sunday FJSC White travelled to Southport Athletic and continued with their good football. After a slow start the Whites settled down and created a number of goal scoring opportunities. Mason Stringer, Josh Tallon, Jaiden Crosby, Diego Funes-Cervera, Clayton Gilbertson and Thomas Crutchley all scored in another good team display.

FJSC Under 8 Blacks played Southport Athletic Red. It was an excellent match in which FJSC played very well. Ryan Lamb, Rory Rankine and man of the match Oliver Hall-Gleeson scored one goal each.

FJSC Under 7’s played away at Southport and Ainsdale Reds. Seb Hodgson gave FJSC the lead but S and A came back well with a number of goals. Not deterred the Under 7’s kept trying hard throughout the game The FJSC boys in only their second ever match are gaining invaluable experience about positional play and tactics and will improve each week.
