MP invites residents to develop a Green New Deal in Formby

MP Bill Esterson will spell out his vision for a green energy future at a public meeting in Formby.

The Sefton Central MP and the pressure group Merseyside Labour For A Green New Deal will lay out the party's plans to deliver a net-zero carbon economy and are inviting residents to join the debate.

The public meeting, open to all, will be held at Holy Trinity Church parish hall on Rosemary Lane, Formby at 8pm on Thursday October 10.

The MP, who has been a vocal critic of fracking and recently voted in Parliament to declare a climate emergency in the UK, said it was time for a revolution in the country to deliver the high-skilled zero-carbon economy that is needed.

The MP said: "Fracking is the opposite of what is needed and I strongly oppose the fracking application at Great Altcar and others across the country.

"Fracking risks causing earth tremors and subsidence, as we have seen with recent events near Blackpool.

"Labour For A Green New Deal is about investment in renewable energy: wind, solar and tidal. That is why I am backing the Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram's plans to bring a tidal energy system to the Mersey. We need to be investing in renewables not fossil fuels.

"A recent report from New Climate Economy suggested investment to tackle climate change could be worth $26 trillion to the world economy, creating 65m new jobs and saving 700,000 lives.

"Labour will invest in renewable energy, low-carbon transport and low-energy high-quality housing. But I also want to know what ideas my constituents have for tackling this massive issue which is why I invite residents to join me at this public meeting on October 10."
