Local girl Laura Hughes WINS Merseyside Woman of the Year

Laura Hughes leads the ‘In memory of Colin McGinty’ running team to raise awareness for the #nomoreknives campaign following the death of her brother several years ago. He was a victim of knife crime in a horrible case of mistaken identity.

Colin McGinty, from Crosby, was just 21 when he was killed after being chased by four men who detectives believed may have mistaken him for someone else. Since his death in 2001, his sister Laura Hughes has dedicated herself to trying to spare other families the same heartache.

This year, to mark what would have been Colin’s 40th birthday, Laura had organised a team of more than 60 people to run the Liverpool Half Marathon in May in his memory and to raise awareness about knife crime. They are also took donations for Radio City’s ‘Cash for Kids’ charity.

The team started as a team of 4 & has now increased to over 100 people. As a team, they nominated Laura for the Merseyside Woman of the Year award (you can see their Facebook page). And she only went & won it at the Crown Plaza on Friday 28th June.
