Formby Junior Sports Club’s season finished on a high with a 3 nil cup final win for FJSC Under 14’s over Phoenix Aces.
The Anita Shaw Memorial Cup Final was played at Walton Hall Park. Without doubt the FJSC team were very much underdogs as their opponents had finished twenty points ahead of them in the league.
Phoenix attacked early on but the FJSC back four of Luke Phillips, Jamie Duggan, Callum Davidson together with goalkeeper Jack Allars held firm. An inspired tactical change made by manager Andrew Gresty to move Charlie Downey to a left sided midfield role had immediate impact.
Midway through the first half FJSC Under 14’s took the lead when Charlie Downey scored with a great header. Confidence grew throughout the team and in the second half the FJSC lead was doubled when Andy Kimmance scored with a long range shot. To make sure of a victory a Christian Schwarze
goal late on secured a very good win.
Congratulations to all the boys and their team manager Andrew Gresty. After a very difficult first couple of months of the season the squad , through hard work started to bond and despite their low league position started to rise to the occasion in the cup matches. It was an outstanding effort.
On the same evening FJSC Under 13 Whites lost 5-2 to Premier Division Champions Town Green in the Catherine Oldfield Cup Final. FJSC played well but could not stop Town Green completing the league and cup double.
