Formby school gets 2nd place in the country out of 1,134 schools that entered a maths competition
Year 6 pupils at Trinity St Peter’s achieved great success last week as they competed in Maths contests on both a local and national level.
To start off their week, the pupils were entered into the National Sumdog Contest; they were given 1000 questions to answer in one week on a range of subjects. The children were incredibly enthusiastic about completing this challenge and working together as team! Although some of the questions were answered in class, the majority were answered at home with some children working so hard that they managed to answer all 1000 questions in the first couple of days of the contest! Year 6 pupil, Summer, who answered her 1000 questions within a couple of days said: “Once I started answering questions at home, I couldn’t stop! My mum was nearly forcing me out the door!” Throughout the week, the children checked their positions on the leaderboard eagerly. Out of the 1,134 schools that entered across the country (11,238 pupils to be exact!), they managed to finish… 2nd place! This was an incredible achievement, especially for the children’s first Sumdog competition. Although they did manage to hold onto first place for a couple of days, they were still delighted with the final result. They surpassed all expectations and targets, having agreed in the previous week to aim for the Top 20. Several children also managed to place in the Top 50 for individual scores. James, one of these pupils, stated: “I found the contest really fun – I stayed up quite late at the weekend to answer more questions! I still carried on playing even after I finished my contest questions. Next time, I am going to think more carefully about certain answers and try and place even higher in the Top 50!” Continuing with their success, the Year 6 children visited Formby High School to participate in their Maths Maze contest. They were put into groups of 6 or 7 and competed valiantly against groups from Freshfield Primary and Redgate Primary through a series of problem solving activities. It was a closely fought battle, but in the end….they won! What a fantastic achievement for the children. They have worked so hard on developing their Maths skills this half-term and it is amazing to see them achieve so much this week! Second place in a national contest and first place in a local competition - well done, Year 6! Everyone is extremely proud. Well done!
