Alison completes The Wall Ultra marathon Run for Alzheimers Research UK

Alison Moore who lives in Southport, ran a gruelling ultra marathon on the 16th June to raise funds for Alzheimers Research UK. This ultra marathon is also known as The Wall. It begins in Carlisle and ends in Newcastle, a total of 69 miles in 1 day, through historic Hadrian’s Wall country.

The Wall ultra marathon is in its 7th year and you have to be a tough cookie to take on this challenge. Mentally and physically fit is a must and maybe , dare I say, a little craziness! Alison had already completed an ultra marathon earlier this year, a mere 50 miles running the L2M Liverpool to Manchester Ultra. It was after this marathon that she knew she was on track to tackle The Wall.

Alison is self employed, a former Royal Navy Lieutenant, an exercise professional, personal trainer and she also provides exercise classes, including chair based exercises, to older people. Look out for the FiftyFive Fit classes in Formby and Southport as you will definitely be taken through a good workout whatever your ability and mobility.

Alison does a lot of work with the elderly, especially in care homes. I first came across Alison a year ago at a care home in Southport where my mum was resident at. The home provided care to people suffering from dementia and I was visiting mum at the time when Alison came to take an exercise class. As many of you will know, dementia affects people in many ways.

On this particular visit, I was sitting in the communal room with mum and several other residents. Alison entered the room and began encouraging the residents to join in with the programme of exercises. I was amazed at how the residents partook and responded so positively to the exercise.

As a volunteer with the Formby Hub, we provide admin support at Alison’s chair based class held on a Friday at Formby Methodist church hall. We also make teas and coffees for the class participants after the exercises have finished. This class is designed for the older person with an added opportunity to have a chat meet new friends.

Alison has raised an amazing amount of £2600 for Alzheimers Research UK as a result of doing the two Ultra Marathons.

Applications are being taken now for The Wall Ultra Marathon 2019. Its worth a look on the website to follow the route. www.ratracethewall.co.uk
