Busy times for Formby Rotary Club
The Rotary Club of Formby has had a busy few weeks with a variety of events taking place.
First off was Stroke Awareness day when the Club offer free blood pressure testing at Chapel Lane Surgery. High blood pressure usually doesn't have any symptoms in its early stages but is the biggest risk factor for a stroke.
Having your blood pressure tested regularly is the best way to ensure it stays at a healthy level, and is treated if it doesn't. This simple procedure can save your life! About 100 people called into the drop-in session at the Surgery to be tested. Those with raised pressures were advised to contact their GPs for further consultation.
Once again the Club would like to thank the nurses who did the testing and Chapel Lane Surgery for the use of their facilities.
A few days later the Club held its annual International Students night. This event is a popular one in the Rotary calendar.
International Students from Liverpool University are invited along to the Club where they meet with Club members and their partners and friends of the Club who support this event. After a traditional British meal the students take it in turn to give a short talk about their home country, their studies, their impressions of Liverpool (always some interesting insights into our scouser psyche) and their hopes for their futures.
This year the Club hosted students from USA, Costa Rica, Italy, Bangladesh, China. Presidents from Southport Sunrise and Maghull and Aughton Rotary Clubs also attended the evening.
Once again the students gave interesting and varied talks and enjoyed meeting up with the guests. Thanks go to Formby Hall Golf Club for their excellent hospitality.
And lastly, the Club held its annual Spring Concert at St Jerome's on Friday. This event raises funds for International Rotary Charities.
The assembled guests were entertained by The Country Folk, The Make Noise Choir and Grateful Fred's Ukelear Band. As in the past everyone had a chance to join in and have a good old singalong! The Club's thanks go to St Jerome's for the use of the Parish Hall and to all the folk who came along and sang themselves hoarse and supported this event and who also dug deep into their pockets for raffle tickets!
