Snow arrives in Formby with the blast of cold Siberian air dubbed the 'Beast from the East'

SNOW has been falling all night across Formby and it looks beautiful but despite gritters being out for most of the night, the roads are deadly. Even the 4x4's are skidding in the treacherous conditions. It's just 1°C in Formby now at 6:55am and the snow is still falling.

The blast of cold Siberian air dubbed the ‘beast from the east’ started early hours this morning. The Met Office warning of plunging temperatures with the possibility of travel delays and power cuts. A yellow warning has been issued for the North West on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Snow showers or longer periods of snow are expected all day Tuesday, accompanied by very low temperatures. There is the potential for travel delays on roads, with some stranded vehicles and passengers, as well as delays or cancellations to rail and air travel. Some rural communities could become cut off. Power cuts may also occur and other services, such as mobile phones, may be affected.”

Across the rest of the UK, more than 200 trains are no longer running, while British Airways says over 60 flights have been cancelled. Meanwhile, there could be blizzards, gales and sleet on Thursday as Storm Emma hits the cold air already over the UK. The wind chill, which could see parts of the country drop as low as -15C (23F), is on par with forecasts for parts of northern Norway and Iceland.
