News from Bill Esterson MP
The Labour Party fought a campaign of hope, not fear. We set out a manifesto which will deliver for the many, not the few.
With the highest turnout in more than 25 years, millions of people – including many who had never voted before – were inspired by Jeremy Corbyn’s bold and radical agenda for change in this country. Here in Sefton Central, our community rejected the Conservatives’ plans for cuts to health and social care, to schools and to pensions. Voters here in Crosby, Formby, Maghull, Lydiate and Aintree embraced the positive agenda put forward by Labour to stand up for the people of our area and to invest in skills, services and infrastructure.
Huge increases in the youth turnout defied the pollsters: they have changed the political landscape of the UK. Millions of voters who felt disenfranchised have now found a voice through the Labour Party.
The Conservatives have no mandate for their manifesto, which showed cynical indifference to all but a privileged few in our country. Labour will now build on the positive results from last week, championing the needs of the many and earning the confidence of the British people. Here in Sefton and across Merseyside, my colleagues and I shall continue to stand up for the vast majority of local people who voted for radical change under Labour.
When a new election is called, whether that is in 6 months, a year from now or after 5 years, we will be ready to form the government our country desperately needs.
