Formby Choir's Joint Spring Production at the Philharmonic Hall
Every other year Formby Choral Society combines with Birkenhead Choral Society and Merchant Taylors' school to sing a major choral classic in Liverpool's world-famous Philharmonic Hall. This joint venture, a sell-out success in 2015, enables young people to perform at a first class venue with two well-established local choirs together with professional soloists and the Liverpool Philharmonia orchestra. Rehearsals at Holy Trinity church hall are now well under way in preparation for this immensely popular event.
This year, on Saturday March 25th, over 250 choristers will be performing Mendelssohn's glorious oratorio,Elijah, which depicts the life of the biblical prophet as described in the Old Testament. It is a hugely popular work, at times bordering on the operatic and crackling with drama and excitement, as well as embracing the sheer beauty of many of the slower arias. It has confirmed Mendelssohn's reputation as one of the greatest composers of sacred music. Mendelssohn himself had definite ideas on the libretto and wrote '...the dramatic element should predominate. The personages should act and speak as if they were living beings'. Premiered in 1846 at Birmingham Town Hall, it was a complete triumph and is now second only to Messiah in the public's affections.
The concert starts at 7.30pm, the English translation will be sung and the choir and orchestra will be conducted by David Holroyd. Tickets are £10, £18 and £24 (under 19s half price) and available from choir members, online at www.liverpoolphil.com or by calling 0151 709 3789
