Formby mens hockey saw a sad defeat last weekend

Formby's long (February 2015) unbeaten away record went up in smoke as a below-par performance at Wakefield saw them lose for the first time this season. Formby opened the scoring with a Connel Capper penalty corner but rather carelessly conceded an equaliser 3 minutes later. The lead was restored after 20 minutes with an identical short corner routine. They pressed without success for the rest of the haslf, only to conced an equaliser from a penalty corner on the stroke of half-time when a couple of rebounds in the circle fell very kindly for Wakefield. The second half saw Formby playing most of the good hockey in the face of some crude challenges that somehow failed to attract the attention of the officials. They had several attempts on goal and were robbed of one by the umpire after Will Miles had wriggled through several defenders to find himself in space in the circle, with support, only for the umpire to blow and award him a really useful free hit outside the circle. They had an even better chance when a foul on Adrian Nash produced a penalty stroke, but Capper unluckily hit the post (as he'd done at Bowdon last week). Inevitably, Wakefied went ahead courtesy of a penalty stroke of their own, then extended their lead with a breakaway goal as Formby pressed for an equaliser. Ricky Davis-Guzman finally beat the 'keeper only for his effort to rebound off the crossbar. Next match is against Brooklands 2s at Formby this Saturday 19th November. Push-back at 13:40hrs
