Formby beach is featured in new film - Native and featured in Boston Sci-fi Film Festival

Film which features Formby Beach as alien location to premiere at major movie event

A film made by a Liverpool production company is to be given its premiere at one of the world’s most respected science fiction film festivals.

Native, which features Formby beach as an alien location, was made by Liverpool-based production company Glasshouse Films.

This coming weekend it will close the Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival, in what director Daniel Fitzsimmons said was a “privilege”.

Daniel, from Crosby , said: “It’s a privilege to screen the film in Boston as it is the leading United States sci-fi film festival, the place where Star Wars was sneak previewed in 1977. It will be a pleasure to premiere the film there.”

The film, which will be shown at the US festival this Saturday, was shot in 2014, predominantly in Dagenham.

But Formby also played its part, as co-writer and co-producer Neil Atkinson explained.

He said: “Everyone at Formby beach was helpful. Dogwalkers gave us a wide berth but the problem was the tide – we had a ticking clock and finished filming with the water up to our director of photography’s knees.”

Native stars Rupert Graves of Sherlock and Last Tango In Halifax and Ellie Kendrick from Game Of Thrones and Misfits, and was scored by Liverpool-based GIT Award winners Baltic Fleet.

It was picked from hundreds of submissions to be part of the Boston festival.

Director Daniel, who is now based in London, said he was looking forward to the premiere.

He added: “Boston Sci-Fi is a festival that has a great history of supporting intelligent and ambitious science fiction cinema, so to be considered part of that community is a real honour.”
