Apply now to become a volunteer Marshal at Southport Speed Week

On 16 March 1926, with little fuss and few spectators, Major Henry Segrave in his bright-red Sunbeam car named Ladybird but, later renamed 'Tiger' set a new land speed record at 152.33 mph (245.15 km/h) between Ainsdale and Formby.

This March sees the 90th Anniversary celebrations.

You can enjoy a fantastic day out and help to make one of Southport’s most historic events an even more enjoyable day out for everyone.

The Events run on Wednesday 16th March on the Beach at Ainsdale and Saturday 19th March around Southport Town centre and the Organisers are looking for Volunteer Marshals to join in the fun and make this wonderful event go smoothly.

Thousands of people are expected to enjoy the motoring extravaganza, which celebrates the Land Speed record being set on Southport Sands in 1926.

The event will feature Classic and Competition Vehicles of the era including the original Sunbeam “Tiger” racing car used on the very day in 1926. These will be on display at The Atkinson and around Kings Gardens on the Saturday.

Organisers are looking for Volunteer Marshals to help with activities, particularly with The Parade Lap along Lord Street, which is due to take place on Saturday afternoon. You can assist in the morning, or you can stay all day to help out.

Southport Speed Week is a free to attend event organised by Aintree Circuit Club, supported by The Atkinson on Lord Street who will be having lots of displays and talks throughout the week.

Councillor David Barton, Dukes Ward, said: "The event is a wonderful occasion to show off our town to the many expected visitors. Volunteer Marshals play a vital role in making the day memorable for everyone, and have a lot of fun as they are next to the action."

Mike Ashcroft, Aintree Circuit Club chairman, said: "Volunteering to be a marshal is a great way to become involved in the event. So please sign up as soon as you can to become part of the team making this fantastic event a reality."

Marshals will be needed in the morning to help ensure vehicles safely arrive at their allocated display positions. The marshals will need to be there at 0830hrs for this task, and will be expected to attend a briefing, where they will be issued with necessary equipment.

Once all the vehicles are in place, which will be by 1030hrs, there is a break period before the parade in the afternoon. Marshals will then be on duty to assist vehicles to get out onto the parade route and to be positioned at locations around the course to ensure the cavalcade goes smoothly.

For the parades, Marshals will need to report to the marshals' centre by 1230hrs as they will need to register first and attend a marshals' briefing before going out on post for 1345hrs.

If you want to volunteer to be a Marshal please apply as soon as possible through the website www.ormskirkmotorfest.com/marshals-registration/ or email nick@ormskirkmotorfest.com.

Teenagers under 18 can apply but will need a responsible adult with them on the day.

There is still time to enter your period car into the event. For an entry form please go to www.ormskirkmotorfest.com
