Storm Jonas to hit Formby on Tuesday

Storm Jonas is heading for Britain and Formby is set to be drenched with heavy downpours of rain on Tuesday January 26th as Storm Jonas heads across the Atlantic straight for the west coast of the UK.

Ironically, the deluge is forecast to land exactly a month after torrential rain on Boxing Day led to severe flooding across the area.

The Met Office has issued a Yellow Alert for Rain across North West England, with areas covered including: Formby, Merseyside, Lancashire, Cumbria, Blackpool, Blackburn with Darwen and Greater Manchester.

The warning is in place between midday on Tuesday (January 26) and 3pm on Wednesday (January 27).

The US East Coast has seen up to 2ft (60cm) of snow as the blizzard, known as Storm Jonas, sweeps across the country.

A Met Office spokesman said that areas of Britain could see between 100 to 200mm of rainfall as the storm reaches us this week.

He said: "An active cold front is expected to become slow-moving across Wales, North West England and south and west Scotland through Tuesday, and into Wednesday, before clearing to the south on Wednesday afternoon.

"Warm air of tropical origins is expected to be entrained into the system, leading to abundant moisture and heavy rain.

"Many parts of the warning area could see 50-100 mm of rain, whilst the most exposed upland parts of north Wales, North West England and South West Scotland could see 150-200 mm.

"As such, there is the potential for river flooding, and also standing water on roads. Strong and gusty south-west winds will also develop."
