A freezing cold beach clean on Monday saw a lot of plastic items on the beach
The beach clean on Monday was a freezing cold event but volunteers still turned up to help. There were seven volunteers who struggled with the bad weather for almost an hour.
They collected a total of 50kg of waste with the most frequent item being found was unfortunately plastic, of which thirty nine items were found.
Andy Laverick, the local Marine Conservation Society Sea Champion (local based volunteer) organised the event which took place on Monday 18th January from 10.00 am at Freshfield beach (on the National Trust property). The previous national events last year saw a record breaking number of volunteers collect and recorded a whopping 273,747 pieces of litter. Beachwatch is our national beach cleaning and litter surveying programme - helping people all around the UK to care for their coastline.
Some of our best-loved marine wildlife is under threat from the waste and litter in our seas, with hundreds of species accidentally eating or becoming entangled in litter.
It's also dangerous for people and damaging to our tourism and fishing industries. We all have a part to play in turning the tide on litter. Join an event or organise your own and be part of the most influential fight against marine litter in the UK!
