THREE local hospices are to benefit from a share of £1,000 thanks to customers at Waitrose, Formby. Each month, Waitrose invites their customers to vote for a charitable organisation to win a share of £1,000, as part of their Community Matters scheme. This month, customers were asked to vote between Queenscourt Hospice in Southport, St Joseph's Hospice in Thornton and Woodlands Hospice, Aintree. Ash Halligan, Community Fundraiser for Queenscourt Hospice collected a cheque worth £367 on behalf of the charity. The money will be used to continue to provide free specialised care for those with a life limiting illness together with support for their relatives and loved ones. A cheque worth £327 was donated to St Josephs Hospice and was collected by Pat Murphy, Fundraising Director at St Joseph's. It was founded by a missionary priest, Father O'Leary in South America and Pakistan in the 1960s. Jospice opened its UK hospice in Thornton in 1974 to provide compassionate care to all persons in the last weeks of their life. Woodlands Hospice were awarded £306 which was collected by Community Fundraising Manager, Christine Peach. Woodlands Hospice is an independent charity committed to delivering the best possible practice and development of specialist palliative care for people with cancer and other life limiting illnesses with complex needs.
