Formby professor Allan Hobson, 75, is appealing to people to help build a £300,000 maternity hospital in war-torn Rwanda, Africa
Professor Allan Hobson was knighted for his humanitarian efforts to save the lives of mothers and babies in Rwanda, following mass genocide.

Professor Allan Hobson
Professor Hobson recalls the first visit he made, in 2000, to the country, where genocidal reprisals were still ongoing at the time.
He said: “I saw locals peering through the broken windows of the maternity hospital watching mothers give birth.”
The professor says, from that moment on, he felt compelled to do something to help and went on to set up the Shyira Trust at St Lukes Church in Formby which has since raised thousands of pounds to improve the maternity hospital, support children in education, set up a coffee business and rebuild derelict homes for children without parents.
Now, the Trust is calling on the community to help raise £300,000 needed to rebuild the maternity hospital.
Professor Hobson said: “We have helped save the lives of many disadvantaged women and babies in Rwanda.
“Risk to lives has increased again because its success has made it so popular that the over crowded hospital needs further development to the cost of £300,000 in order to continue saving lives.”
