Free Furniture Recycling Workshop in South Sefton

Sefton residents will get free lessons in ‘upcycling’ old furniture when a novel roadshow designed to reduce the amount of waste in landfill arrives in the borough later this month.

Experts from Project UP – funded by Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority (MRWA) – will lead free furniture restoration workshops for visitors to South Sefton Household Waste Recycling Centre, Bootle on 30 September.

There will be two workshop sessions: 10am-12pm and 1-3pm. There are 10 places on each session and places are filling up fast. To book on please email jonathan.hutchinson@groundwork.org.uk.

Jon Hutchinson of Project UP said: “So many people think they have no handiwork skills but it really is so easy to transform an old bit of furniture into something that looks great.

“We’ll be showing visitors to the centre some basic skills to get them started and helping them realise just how much can be done with old bits of furniture.”

Cllr Graham Morgan, MRWA Chairperson, said: “Project UP is a brilliant initiative and the workshops are a great chance to learn some new skills, get a ‘new’ piece of furniture and help reduce the amount of waste that goes in to landfill sites at the same time.”

Project UP is run by Groundwork Cheshire, Lancashire and Merseyside, and was awarded a £19,500 grant from Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority’s Community Fund to deliver up to 20 upcycling workshops for the public and provide upcycling training for young people not in education or employment.

It has a permanent workshop in Widnes where young trainees learn the skills needed to restore furniture which is either then sold through the Project Up shop or donated to vulnerable local households.
