THERE are less than 20 weeks until Christmas, and to most people the count down to Santa arriving is something they would rather forget about until the first day of advent. But for the Formby Christmas Lights Committee, the count down to Christmas is a year long project as they plan, organise and fundraise for the festive event. As the official switch on date nears on Sunday November 22, organisers are urging residents and traders to get into the festive spirit and make a contribution to the annual event. Every year volunteers, working on the Christmas lights switch on have held fundraising events and collections in a bid to raise as much money as possible for the festive switch on event, which was previously match funded by Sefton Council. However, the organisers now rely on the support of the community, with donations being made by Formby Parish Council and local traders. Pat Wordley, Chair of the Formby Christmas Lights Appeal said: “The Christmas lights switch on is a hugely popular event, but it does cost an awful lot to put on over the festive season. ”This year we also need to replace the tree lights on Chapel Lane and at a cost of £1,000 per tree, it will really stretch our resources. “Our funding comes mostly from the local traders who kindly donate whatever they can as we all appreciate that having the village looking gorgeous over the festive season helps trade. ”With the prospect of parking charges being inflicted on us by Sefton Council, we anticipate that trade will be negatively affected. “This is why it is more important than ever that we acknowledge the contribution made by all the organisations, as we will soon be knocking on doors to ask for more for this year's Christmas lights event.” Some of the businesses and traders who have so far contributed to the event include Acorn Kitchens, Cassidys, China Butterfly, Five Star Motors, Formby Books, Formby Flooring, Left Bank Brasserie, The Olde Bookshop and many more. As part of the event there will be Christmas Market stalls, funfair rides, barbeques, live entertainment and even a visit from Father Christmas.
