Formby Luncheon Club celebrate Golden Anniversary

Formby Luncheon Club is provided by Formby Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) and is a club for Members who should be 60 years of age or over. This vital community service recently celebrated their golden anniversary, by holding a special dinner event at the Ramada Hotel, Southport. Formby Luncheon Club on Rosemary Lane has been providing a range of support and care to the residents of Formby for 50 years and to commemorate the achievement they held a special celebration event for all their 140 volunteers, organisers and service users. The service, which is provided solely by volunteers, is a registered charity and was set up in 1965 by the then Formby Urban District Council and was located in Holy Trinity Parish Hall. Its main aim was to provide a focal point where elderly people could enjoy companionship and a balanced meal. Among those who attended were staff from Formby Tesco, who have been working in partnership with the Luncheon Club to provide resources at their afternoon tea or coffee morning events. The event, which took place on Monday June 9, was a way to say thank you to all those who attend and help out at the Luncheon Club. They were treated to a three course meal, drinks and entertainment. Jean Jones, Chairperson of Formby Luncheon Club said: “The celebration was a great success, everyone has a wonderful time and it was a great way to say thank you to all those who have helped out throughout the years and to celebrate our achievement. ”Formby Luncheon Club is of great benefit to the community as it helps prevent social isolation, and provides lunches for those who perhaps find it difficult to cook for themselves.“ Nikki Benson, Community Champion at Formby Tesco said: ”We were blessed to be invited to the Luncheon Clubs 50th anniversary celebration. “We had a beautiful meal, drinks and were entertained by a wonderful singer. ”Jean Jones and her helpers really worked hard to organise such a fantastic afternoon, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, Formby really is lucky to have so many wonderful people who give up their time to help so many otherwise isolated people.“
