Formby Village...
There seems to be a lot of people who question if our Beautiful Formby Village is actually still a village. We want to set the story straight. The answer is quite simply - YES. Formby is still a village, despite its ever growing population being over 25,000 now. This is the reason why.....
Formby is a VILLAGE. It is of no matter how many people are in a village, some villages are bigger than towns.
In The U.K. the biggest difference between a hamlet and a village is that villages have a church. The difference between a village and a town is that the town has a market. How do I know if a place is a city or a town or a village?
In British English we can distinguish between a city, a town, a village or a hamlet using a historical perspective. Using this generally held historical perspective we can see the following distinctions between cities, towns, villages and hamlets:
A CITY: has a cathedral or a university or both A TOWN: has a market A VILLAGE: doesn’t have a cathedral or a market but it will have a church A HAMLET: is very small with only a handful of houses and usually doesn’t have any shops or other services. It would be unusual for it to have a church, but occasionally they do.
