Temperatures set to soar from this week onwards

Formby is set to sizzle in a three-month heatwave from the end of April, according to the Met Office.

Temperatures are set to climb from this week and things will be hotting up by the May bank holidays.

Forecasters predict temperatures could hit 28 degrees and say this year could be the country’s hottest spring and summer.

Visitors to tourist hotspots such as our beautiful Formby Beach and National Trust Squirrel Reserve basked in 18-degree sun last weekend and we could see similar conditions for the weeks ahead.

The Met Office three-month April-June contingency forecast has not been released publicly - but is being briefed to Government, councils and emergency services, helping to plan for hot conditions ahead.

The Met Office forecast said: “From April to June, near to above-average temperatures are most likely. There is a reduction in the probability of below-average temperatures.

“The probability UK mean temperatures will fall into our warmest category is between 20% and 25%. The probability it will fall into the coldest category is 10%.

“April to June has a slight preference for below-average pressure, associated with wetter-than-average conditions.”

Vets are warning that pets can struggle as the temperature rises and The British Veterinary Association have said extra care should be taken to look after pets in the warmer weather.

Vet John Blackwell, President of the BVA, said: “As it gets hotter this summer, all owners need to think about taking simple steps to ensure their pets are happy and healthy during the warm weather.

“Most people know that dogs should never be left in cars by themselves, even when the day is warm as opposed to hot, but it can be tempting to ignore advice if you think you won’t be gone for long.

“Leaving the car windows open and a bowl of water is not enough. As a dog can only cool down through its tongue and paw pads, it cannot react quickly enough to cope with the rapidly rising heat inside a car.”

Britain had its hottest summer on record in 2006 and warmest spring in 2011.
