Firefighters To Hold Training Exercise at Southport Pier on Friday 28th.....

Firefighters will hold a simulated rescue at Southport Pier as part of a training exercise. Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service is holding an exercise in conjunction with Sefton Council on Friday, November 28 from 10am. At least three fire appliances will be deployed to the pier on the day. The exercise will follow the scenario of a rescue from a simulated tram fire on the pier. This is one of the ongoing exercises that firefighters carry out at sites in communities as part of their training.

Crew Manager Steve McHale, who is leading the exercise, said: “Due to this being a unique location and unique structure, we thought it would be beneficial to run an exercise at the pier. “The exercise will be carried out in partnership with Sefton Council. “It will also raise firefighters’ awareness of the mechanisms of the tram and the pier.” Steve Irwin, Operations Manager at Sefton Council, said: “We are pleased to support Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service as part of this important exercise. “It will give valuable training to fire officers, especially those with limited or no experience of piers. “At the end of the exercise, we will get feedback on the systems in place, and advice on any improvements required to ensure Southport Pier is a safe environment for staff, concessions and visitors.”
