Dancers at last year's Liverpool Irish Festival

The Liverpool Irish Festival gets underway tomorrow with 64 events running across the city.

The festival is the largest celebration of Irish culture in the UK and shines a light on the cultural links between Liverpool and Ireland.

Here are 10 events well worth considering:

1) Liverpool Irish Family Celebration

The Museum of Liverpool, Mann Island, Liverpool

A day of free fun for all the family, including a guided story of the Irish in Liverpool and the Trad Collective family music workshop. From 12.30pm to 2pm award winning children’s author Malachy Doyle reads enchanting stories and helps older children (aged 7+) create their own magical story. From 12pm to 2pm, Trad Collective hold a drop in family music workshop where you can learn to play traditional Irish instruments. From 1pm to 4pm Irish illustrator Donough O’Malley demonstrates his skills at a drawing workshop.

Location: Museum of Liverpool

Date: October 25, 11am to 4pm

2) A fine Irish Feast

This four course dining experience certainly will be a feast, featuring contemporary and traditional fare from Ireland. The students at the City of Liverpool College have been exploring the country’s food heritage, and are inviting people to join them for this evening of culinary delights. Tickets £25, includes drink on arrival.

Location: The Academy Restaurant, Duke Street

Date: October 24, 6.30pm

3) Samhain - a night of occult electronic exploration

The Palm House in Sefton Park lit up at night

Irish electronica artists, including Sh*t Robot, Boxcutter and SertOne, travel across the Irish Sea for this special concert in one of the city’s most beautiful settings. The music will be interwoven with striking visuals and nightmarish creatures to mark the spooky occasion. Costumes encouraged. Tickets £8.50

Date: October 31, 8pm to 1am

4) Kellie Strom: Illustration Talk

The illustrator, who was born in Copenhagen and raised in Ireland, explains the process used to create the illustrations for her most recent Leporello (concertina) book, ‘Worse Things Happen at Sea’. Strom creates intricate colour separations which overprint to give the illusion of many more colours than are actually used in the printing method. Free admission, no booking required, over 16s only.

Date: October 24, 2pm to 3pm

5) Five Fables

Five Fables is on at the Liverpool Irish Festival

One of Seamus Heaney’s final works before his death in 2013 gets its English premiere. Five Fables is five animated tales, translated by the Nobel laureate and narrated by Billy Connolly. Enchanting viewing.

Location: Picturehouse at FACT

Date: October 26, 3.30pm

6) Print and Illustration Extravaganza

Emerse yourself in the best Irish and Liverpool creative talent at this event which features an exhibition, print fair, live print workshop and family activities. Meet young creatives, snap up a piece of artwork and have a go at some printing. Free admission.

Location: The Bluecoat, School Lane

Date: October 26, 11am to 5pm

7) North Heritage Walk

The city’s Irish links are revealed from the glories of the Empire to the dark depths of the Irish Famine, and Braddock’s egg to the footsteps of O’Connell, Larkin and Parnell.

Tickets £7 and £5, booking essential, via 07854 415721.

8) Dubliners 100 UK Book Launch

Dubliners 100 gets its UK book launch at the Liverpool Irish Festival

This special event marks the centenary of James Joyce’s Dubliners. New Irish publishing company Tramp Press has commissioned a collection of 15 short stories inspired by the originals. The idea is the brainchild of Thomas Morris, editor of The Stinging Fly, who together with Tramp Press has produced Dubliners 100. This event is its UK book launch and features readings by some of the authors, plus readings from the original Dubliners by Ambassador Daniel Mulhall. A panel discussion will follow. Tickets £4.

9) The very first Roswick Liverpool Irish Festival GAA Cup

The North West’s GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) teams come together for a tournament, held over two days. There will also be an exciting hurling match, between Liverpool club Wolfe Tones and Fullen Gaels of Manchester. Spectators can cheers the teams on free of charge.

Location: Wavertree Mystery Park

Date: October 25 and November 1

10) Celtic Creations at Calderstones

Brave youngsters are invited to this special Celtic story session, where they will be transported into fantasy worlds filled with giants, monsters and untold terror. The session will finish with a gruesome monster-making workshop.

Location: Calderstones Mansion House

Date: October 28, 1pm to 2.30pm
